Kompano - redesign of a de-leafing robot app

This project, in collaboration with Priva, focused on improving the Kompano robot’s digital interfaces for greenhouse management by identifying usability issues and redesigning the Kompano mobile application. Through user testing and iterative prototyping, an interactive prototype was developed with recommendations to enhance clarity, feedback, and overall user experience.

The Kompano robot is a de-leafing automation system designed to support greenhouse labor shortages by removing tomato plant leaves. Operators interact with the system through two digital interfaces: Kompano Me (for managers) and the Kompano mobile app (for direct control).

Instead of following a rigid research-to-design pipeline, the project embraced an iterative approach—testing concepts with real users, identifying usability gaps, and refining solutions based on feedback.

Testing revealed that users struggled with ambiguous icons, missing feedback, and redundant information. The redesign focused on clearer feedback, logical task flows, and a more intuitive interface

The new prototype simplifies robot control, enhances error reporting, and introduces a chatbot for troubleshooting. The redesigned app ensures a seamless connection between managers and operators, improving efficiency in greenhouse automation.
